THE WORLD’S FIRST URANIUM MEMBRANE FILTRATION PLANT
Commissioned in October 2013, the Acid Recovery Plant at the Kayelekera mine in Malawi was designed to recover concentrated sulphuric acid from process liquor.
This project was the catalyst for the formation of BMS Engineers. At the behest of the client, BMS Engineers were tasked with overseeing:
- Pilot plant trials
- Detailed plant design
- Installation
- Commissioning
- Operator training
- Remote plant monitoring
- Technical support
The plant consisted of ultrafiltration (UF) followed by four stages of nanofiltration (NF).

Average daily acid recovery = 56%
Peak daily acid recovery = 79%
Neutralising chemicals reduction = 55%
A verified payback period of less than 6 months was achieved

BMS Engineers retain the patent of the acid recovery technology that was developed as part of this project.
